7 places to visit Lagos and Algarve

Portugal’s Algarve region is a treasure trove of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and unforgettable experiences. Having spent some time in Lagos and its surroundings, I can confidently say that this region truly exceeded my expectations. From stunning coastal cliffs to quaint town centers, there’s something for every traveler to enjoy. Here’s a guide to the must-see spots in Lagos and the Algarve that will inspire your next holiday. Hope you will find what you’re looking for…

#1 Exploring City Lagos Centre

No trip to Lagos is complete without spending some time in the Lagos town center. This charming area is brimming with history, culture, and tons of dining options. The architecture reflects the town’s rich heritage, with narrow cobblestone streets leading you past whitewashed buildings adorned with beautiful tiles. You will definitely feel the culture when walking around.

The center is a food lover’s paradise, with numerous restaurants serving up traditional Portuguese dishes or other. Whether you’re in the mood for fresh seafood or want to sample local pastries, Lagos has something to satisfy every palate.

For a unique shopping experience, explore some of the local boutiques and specialty stores. One gem that stood out was the Original Ceramic Grater shop, where I picked up a beautiful ceramic rasp that’s perfect for grating pesto or preparing bruschetta. It’s a delightful keepsake that adds a touch of the Algarve to my cooking at home.

#2 Ponta da Piedade: Lagos’ Natural Wonder

If there’s one place in the Algarve that will take your breath away, it’s Ponta da Piedade. This iconic hotspot in Lagos is renowned for its dramatic cliffs, stunning rock formations, and crystal-clear waters. The result of centuries of erosion, these cliffs have created a labyrinth of natural arches, hidden caves, and sea stacks that are nothing short of mesmerizing.

Whether you choose to explore Ponta da Piedade by foot or by sea, the experience is truly magical. There’s enough parking space available nearby the cliffs, which makes it easy to visit by car. For a more immersive experience, consider booking a boat or kayak tour with local companies like Blue Fleet. Their knowledgeable guides share fascinating stories about the area’s history and natural wonders, adding depth to the already inspiring scenery.

#3 Praia Do Camilo: Where Nature Meets History

Praia do Camilo is one of Lagos’ most picturesque beaches, and a must-see on any Algarve itinerary. The beach is tucked between big cliffs and can be reached via a stunning wooden staircase that zigzags down to the golden sands below.

The views from the top are breathtaking, offering a panoramic glimpse of the clear turquoise waters and the unique rock formations that make Praia do Camilo so special. It’s an intimate spot perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or simply admiring the natural beauty. The photo I took of the staircase truly captures the charm of this hidden gem!

#4 Sagres: A Surfer’s Paradise

For those who are looking for some waves, Sagres is the place to be. Known as the “end of the world,” Sagres is located at the southwestern tip of Europe and is famous for its rugged cliffs, powerful waves, and laid-back vibe. It’s a paradise for surfers, but even if you’re not hitting the waves, Sagres has plenty to offer.

One of the highlights of my visit was watching the sunset from the cliffs near Fortaleza de Sagres. The view is breathtaking, and the atmosphere is perfect for capturing some incredible photos. After a day of exploring, treat yourself to a meal at one of Sagres’ many great restaurants. A personal favorite was Armazém, located at the corner of R. Cmte. Matoso and R. José Luís. The local cuisine is delightful, with fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese flavors.

#5 Praia Da Luz

Just a 15-minute drive from Lagos, Praia da Luz is a charming seaside town perfect for a relaxing getaway. Its pristine, uncluttered beach is framed by the stunning Rocha Negra, a striking rainbow-colored mountain formed by ancient volcanic activity. The gentle waves make it a great spot for beginner surfers, while the town itself offers a range of delightful restaurants like ZaZu at the beach front, where you can enjoy fresh seafood with a view.

Praia da Luz is also known for its welcoming, relaxed atmosphere, making it a hidden gem in the Algarve that’s well worth a visit.

#6 Meia Praia: The Quiet Beach Escape

For a more tranquil beach experience, Meia Praia is the place to go. This expansive beach is one of the largest in Lagos, offering plenty of space to find your perfect spot. The wooden deckings that line the beach add a charming touch and make it easily accessible. The serene atmosphere and beautiful surroundings make Meia Praia a great choice for those looking to relax and enjoy some quiet time by the sea.

#7 Portimão: the vibrant city

Portimão is a bustling city in the Algarve, home to Praia da Rocha, a popular beach known for its golden sands and stunning cliffs. If you prefer relaxing without the sand, NoSoloÁgua offers a luxurious beach club experience with a pool right by the sea, making it the perfect spot to enjoy Portimão’s coastal beauty when you don’t want sand between your toes. There is plenty of beach spots if you prefer something else. Portimão is one of the bigger city’s in the algarve nearby the beach.
